Are your employees happy? Satisfied? Engaged? While it is nearly impossible to be all these things all the time, taking into account the state of mind of your employees is crucial for success. Why might you ask? Well, according to some Gallop research, employee disengagement costs the United States upwards of $550 billion a year in lost productivity - and that isn’t a figure to shy away from. Which begs the questions - what do you do about it?
Fortunately, today, we are going to tackle just thought and give you some tips and tricks to bolster employee engagement and satisfaction, which won’t only lead to happier employees, but more productive ones.
Start from the top down
One of the most powerful and yet, simple methods to increase employee engagement is to have the leadership teams take the first step. When your staff sees the organization from the top down exhibiting the type of behavior, they are being asked display, it becomes much easier to get company-wide buy-in.
Transparency is key
When employees are entrusted with sensitive information and are privy to the bulk of the company information, they will inherently feel a deeper investment in the organization which invariably will lead to increased satisfaction and productivity.
Say “thank you”
You’d be hard-pressed to find a simpler or easier approach for employee satisfaction, but you’d be amazed at how far a little “thank you” can go. Research suggests that employees who feel encouraged and supported by their supervisors are more engaged than those who don’t.
Be flexible
Life can be complicated sometimes - and that usually goes beyond business and into people’s personal lives. However, having a rigid and inflexible system in place to deal with occurrences as they happen can be very detrimental. When possible, try and be accommodating to your employees. Allow them to leave earlier on occasion if need be or work from home if possible, and you’ll soon see how committed and engaged your staff quickly becomes.
Hire for traits, not just skills
Skills, for the most part, can be learned. However, inherent traits and behaviors are not the types of things people learn; rather, they just have it. So when you hire for the “type” of people you are looking for, the kind, dedicated, punctual, and coachable, you’ll find yourself with a staff of engaged men and women who are not only more satisfied but more productive.
Play together
Employees who feel connected with one another on a personal level report being more engaged and satisfied with their employer. So take that fact as a cue to set up some out of work events, like a baseball team, or any other social activity that brings your staff together in a non-professional environment.
