Find Your Perfect Schedule Fit Among First, Second, and Third Shifts

First, second, and third shift options are available. Choose between these options carefully. Consider the pros and cons of each one. In doing so, you'll find the perfect schedule that allows you to remain productive and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Let's look at each of these options in depth and why each one may be the perfect schedule for you.

First Shift

Generally, a first shift starts in the morning and ends in the afternoon. Think of it like a day at grade school. A student arrives in the classroom in the morning, and their day comes to a close in the afternoon. In the same way, you start your job in the morning and conclude your day in the afternoon.

Early risers often thrive in first shift jobs. If you work one of these jobs, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the afternoon and evening. You can develop a schedule outside of work that allows you to get to bed at a consistent time each night.

Second Shift

During a second shift, you start your work day late in the afternoon and end it late in the evening or early in the morning. Typically, the start time is 2-5 p.m. Expect your work shift to end between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Flexibility is one of the biggest reasons why workers choose a second shift as their perfect schedule. In this shift, you have your entire morning and part of your afternoon free. This gives you time to bring your kids to school and pick them up from it, run errands, and enjoy your day.

Third Shift

Often called the "graveyard shift," third shift begins late at night or early in the morning and ends at morning time. It is a viable option for night owls.

A third shift opens up many career opportunities. Companies sometimes struggle to find candidates willing to accept third shift roles. If you are open to these roles, you could get your foot in the door at a great business. You could earn an above-average starting salary as well.

How to Choose Your Perfect Schedule

When you evaluate your perfect schedule, look beyond your paycheck. Your income is one of many factors to consider as you assess schedule options. Yet, if you take a third shift job solely because of the starting salary, you risk compromising your work-life balance.

If you are unsure about how well you will perform in a new schedule, accept a part-time role before you move into a full-time position. As an example, a company offers part-time work for warehouse workers. You accept a second shift warehouse job. If you perform well and like the schedule, you can pursue full-time warehouse job opportunities.

Lastly, do not make a rash decision regarding your perfect schedule. Conduct plenty of research as you examine roles in depth. If you want extra help, partner with a staffing agency.
